Graph of Dune Loss

Dune Loss at Winterton-on-Sea from June 2001 to August 2003

dune loss at Winterton

Graph shows the loss of dune frontage in metres at the Coastwatch Lookout over the past two years in approximately three monthly meterings in blue with total accumulated loss in purple. Although the loss is irregular the trend is shown over time. Projecting the accumulative loss provides an estimate of the long-term losses that might be expected over the next few years with ongoing offshore aggregate dredging. The Coastguard Lookout is now only 1.5 metres from the edge and already the corner of the car-park has gone. Soon the café will be lost, and in a few years the sea will be at the village. No defence is to be provided.

Period of measurements taken June 2001 to August 2003 inclusive.
Measurements by Alan McMurdue of Coastwatch.
