David Levy – The MCZ rally at Parliament – Mar 2013

A freezing late morning in February brought a large and intrepid group of people, made up of children to grandparents, on a march of protest across the Thames to the halls of Parliament. An excellent turn-out for MCS and Fish Fight on such a miserable day, and it was culminated by a rally headed by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingsall who shouted for all he was worth.

What do we want?
127 MCZsMCZ Marine Conservation Zone!
When do we want them?
Now!

Fish, squid, mermaids, Neptune. . . . to name some of those there, making the event an eye-catching and colourful spectacle.

From a Marinet viewpoint, I could only reflect that an opportunity was maybe missed by the organisers to lobby MPs direct. For if the people at this event had “green carded” their MPs in Central Lobby more could have been achieved on the day.

It was, though, a good reminder that the Government is far from fulfilling the need for an ecologically viable network of marine reserves.

Getting the network right is important – alongside other actions to curb overfishing. That is the really big fish to catch.
