Yesterday I shared a lunch table with two lively ninety-seven year old gentlemen who both had a distinguished war record and subsequent work life. They were the type of people you can only describe as inspirational.
Whilst listening to them I wondered about how they saw the world today and I subsequently asked them because both characters are switched on and current, so I was really interested in their take on life in Great Britain.
I also wished the Minister of Defence had been sat at the table too, anything to get the Minister to justify his decision not to protect the Goodwin Sands in the English Channel.
This has meant turning a blind eye to the establishing of aggregate dredging in areas where World War I and II ships and aircraft have come to rest on the Sands, with no eternal peace for those lives lost.
In my ignorance I thought the British Legion would fight this moral cause, but they too are trapped by charity law.
These gentlemen at the lunch table were the epitome of manners, and their core of steel left me in no doubt that some things are worth fighting for — and that is our inheritance.
It is only right we honour these men who survived, but we need to equally honour those who were not quite as lucky and did not, and who now need defending.
Marinet will try to get those who are responsible to protect their resting places in the Goodwin Sands, for fear they be forgotten.
