Further erosion at Hopton

Additional costs have arisen to try to combat Hopton dune erosion following further storm driven waves and seabed levelling, with the sea coming over the revetments to cut into the sandy cliff face. The cost of emergency cliff and dune repairs has now reached £3m due to the most recent battering as the latest damage struck the undefended Shorefield and Horizons sections of the park, either side of that stretch repaired with 7,000 tons of rock in June at a cost of £960,000.

The sand-stripped beach has permitted high waves to reach the base of the defences and overtop them, bringing about further cliff fall since the May defences were placed. See ‘Emergency measures to protect Hopton erosion hit Hopton cliffs’.

Workers have now used the park’s 2,000 tonnes of Norwegian rock stockpile in a bid to halt the damage, while a further 7,000 tonnes of granite is being shipped in from Norway.
