North Suffolk Coastal Erosion

The highly popular seaside resort at Hopton-on-Sea has all but lost its once extensive beach, and hence has a high probability of losing much of its tourist dependant income too. The metal steps over the wooden sea defence (revetment) that were installed by the borough council only two years ago are now left dangling in the air by well over one metre. More than two metres of beach disappeared at Hopton over Easter, with even more disappearing over the past three weeks.

The photograph above shows what remains of Hopton Beach looking south from the Gorleston side with severe scouring behind the revetment and no longer protecting the cliffs sufficiently from elevated rough seas. That below shows the scene looking north toward Gorleston, with a loss of access and sand that once covered the steel pilings, now down to the footings.

Hopton Beach

More than six foot of beach disappeared at Hopton over Easter. The two sets of metal steps over the wooden sea defence (revetment) installed by the borough council less than two years ago were left dangling in the air by five feet and three feet respectively.
