Super Trawler stopped – for now

Readers who sent an e-mail to the Australian Minister Tony Burke asking him to stop the huge super-trawler will be delighted to learn that they have been successful in averting the marine environmental impact of such this activity, in that just as the trawler Abel Tasman, a.k.a the FV Margiris, was about to leave port a ban was placed on its harvesting Australian waters for up to two years. Over 18,000 protest e-mails were sent, coupled with a petition with 93,864 petition signatures.

Minister Burke said in a press conference “no doubt there has been a massive public focus on this”. Furthermore Fisheries Minister Joe Ludwig announced a review of their 20 year old fisheries management legislation in the light of concerns about super trawlers devastating fish stocks.
