Scientific moorings are essential tools for oceanographers. The design of a large float connected by long wire to heavy weights sits on the ocean floor holding the mooring in place. Unlike most buoys, which function like floating weather stations, this one from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is listening for whales.
