David Levy – The strange world that is politics today – Jan 25

We live in strange and mystical times where all conventions are turned completely around with the consent of the public and good sense.

It’s almost like we feel let down so fundamentally that we are willing to give anything a go.

This is at a time when Russian and Chinese politics are actively manoeuvring their military muscle, and America is talking the same language. ‘Drill, baby, drill; is the mantra coming from the White House. Let’s take back the Panama Canal too, and make Greenland an American State. If they have not given in to barbarism, where are the voices of reason?

I think back to a time where the Nazi Party took power in Germany, and systematic bullying and violence became the daily visual experience for the normal German. This progressed at such a pace that soon all were throwing the ‘Sieg Heil ‘and screaming at those less fortunate to themselves. We are not too far from repeating that History around the globe.

Climate Change is off the political agenda despite the evidence of more extreme weather impacts around the world, including America. The rhetoric of those partisan voices is to expand and build, and to hell with Nature. Grab what is not yours and make it yours, and forget about the free will of the people in 2025’s Ukraine. Self-interest that only meets its own needs is eroding support for democracy, and this new wave in politics is slowly leaving this poor nation of Ukraine to fight its own lone battle against a pitiless adversary supported by alliances with Iran and North Korea.

Where then this tiny island?

I wish I knew. All that I see is bound up with politicians who are not prepared to trust the people in their choice of options about what must have priority in our lives.

We can’t have everything, and people can’t have everything and it’s no good pretending that we can. However that is what politicians are promising us, and fail to deliver.
