David Levy – Transparency or Civil Service Psychobabble – Jul 21

I recommend for all those who suffer from sleep deprivation to watch Parliament ‘live tv’ for the interminable ability of politicians to render carefully crafted replies to what appear to be sensible questions.

It’s an art form worthy of appreciation, and it leaves one speechless at the pointlessness of the debate.   Well done those civil servants in the Ministries who produce such word-fodder.

It is so smooth as to make a sleep draught irrelevant.

I have been following the debate on the Environment Bill which is currently in the House of Lords.   This is where Zac Goldsmith, representing the Government, drones on with speed as he dispatches their Lordships’ list of amendments with the accomplished skill of a New Zealand batsman.   It is certainly efficient.   Although in terms of manners, it is reflective of a spoilt child wanting his own way.   To my eye that is very discourteous toward those who have the experience to really contribute in a positive manner.

If I was a Peer of the Realm I would not be so quick to cave in, but there may be things in the wings I am not aware of that are happening.   For the sake of the rule of law, I certainly hope so.

Meanwhile both Stephen and I await the introduction of our amendments which will transform the Environment Bill if adopted.

What I have seen so far it’s not very encouraging, but we live in Hope.

My sleep pattern after several hours of following the debate is most healthy, and I dream with regularity of Guy Fawkes.   I don’t know why.
