Defra MSFD Consultation Submission
We provide here a copy of the submission (pdf file) by MARINET to the UK government under its public consultation (June 2012) on the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive which has asked whether the definition of “good environmental status” [GES] being advanced by the UK (Defra) is sound. MARINET has confined its comment to GES Descriptor 3 (commercial fish and shellfish stocks) and has argued strongly that the definition being used by the UK is seriously flawed and essentially has been “designed to fail” thus devaluing, if ultimately adopted, the integrity and worth of the Directive.
