Emergency Sea Defences at Hopton

Three Hopton Holiday Village caravans had to be suddenly moved back from the crumbling erosion undermined cliff top at Hopton (North Suffolk Coast) and emergency measures rapidly instituted.

A 200 metre line of massive Norwegian rocks left over from the Felixstowe sea defences have started being placed in position along the cliff base by a heavy dumper to shield the coastline from further sea damage The remainder of the 5,000 tonnes of rock needed is being shipped into Lowestoft harbour from the Larvik quarry in Norway.

The scheme is being funded by £300,000 from Bourne Leisure, the operators of Hopton Holiday Village, and £200,000 from Great Yarmouth Borough Council. In the long term Bourne Leisure is pursuing a £7m sea defence scheme of three 120m headlands.

The following two pictures taken by James Bass follow show the work in progress.
